Educational temporary tatoos—Wear to Learn

   h_r3c21.jpgos_monkey.jpg

h_main.jpg

My daughter is absolutley in love with being tatooed with temporary tatoos.  Sometimes finding appropriate tatoos can be hard!  Enter Tatoos for Tots!

The idea for Tatoos for Tots began when a mom, who is a teacher, had a child that was into temporay tatoos.  She thought of  a great concept to turn temporary tatoos into an educational tool.  Each cute graphical “tatoo” includes the name of what it is to aid in the learning of a new word.  I love this idea!!!  Mama Jen

Rent Toys from Baby Plays….what a great idea!

babayplays.jpg

Lori Pope, a fellow mom came up with an idea that will help unclutter your home, and give your kids the chance to try many different toys—a Toy rental company called Baby Plays—lots of choices and opportunities to continuously refresh your child’s playtime.  No more fear that you spent money on a toy for your child which may be as interesting to them as your dusty treadmill is to you.

All of the toys stocked are kid approved, organized by age appropriateness, sanitized and loaded with fresh batteries before they reach your door.  Pope specifically chooses toys that are easy to clean, so you can rest your germ fears on this one!

“Families generally keep the toys for one month and then send them back in the box they came in, using a postage-paid return label the company includes with each shipment. Most parents know that’s long enough for little kids to exhaust their interest.

But it’s no big deal if the little one wants to hang on to a couple of toys for several months, Pope said. Parents can just exchange the toys they don’t want, and new toys are shipped out as the old ones are returned.” (AOL Money and Finance)

Don’t worry that you will be receiving really worn items either…anything that is more than “gently worn” is donated to needy families who are nominated by Baby Plays customers.

Each shipment of toys is lead tested—wooohoo!  Also, toys with small parts, or that are not easy to clean are avoided.  Fantastic!

Lori Pope also mentions that this is a great way for grandparents to have some great toys on hand and change it up every now and again.  So smart and full of MomAppeal!!!

Happy Toy Renting and great job Lori!  Mama Jen

A little birdie told us about … hip Little Lark

shirt_birds_pink_1066_toddler.jpg anew_letterpress-twig-card.jpg shirt_tree_blue_1074_kid21.jpg newborn_gown_fiddlehead_1092_baby.jpg

This modern mom is all a-twitter about Little Lark and its hand-printed baby clothes and cards. The Ts are hip little statements in graphics form that transcend the usual standbys of butterflies and trucks on girlish pink and boyish blue (though you can find those sweet colors stylishly paired with modern brown). Instead, it’s artful wear for all, including a small selection for mamas and papas who like a little sophistication to their Ts.

The clothes are deliciously comfortable. I’ve outfitted myself and my own little larks in shirts of the same vein (Tree and Birds styles) — we call them our mama bird and baby birdies outfits. I’m drawn to the simple strength and sweetness of the organic images — the birds, fiddlehead fern and tree branches designs — but love the playfulness of the gnome, robot and bike graphics, too. Little Lark offers shirts, onesies, hats, pants, bags, hoodies and even individually letter-pressed cards. I could’ve bought enough of the latter to supply my correspondence needs for a year — the paper is a great heavy stock and the colors of the crisp graphics and envelopes among my favorite combinations. But truly, the cards are so beautiful I framed and hung them in groupings to make some bold statements on my walls.

But there’s more to squawk about when it comes to Little Lark: The conscientious side of me loves that the attire is 100% cotton —onesies are organic— sweatshop-free, American-made fabric. The arty side of me loves the individuality of the pieces: The inks are hand-mixed, the designs hand-printed. Even the unique labels are hand-printed on recycled fabrics and pressed into the inner shirtback. I’m a sucker for packaging, and dig that the shirts arrive in their own little printed muslin bags.

This mama-owned business in Portland, OR, is creatively powered by Christy Nyboer, a painter, sculptor and mom to two boys. She and pal/neighbor Jean Sammis co-founded the company in 2006. (While the two still inspire each other, Sammis now focuses solely on Lark Press.) Nyboer is busy prepping the spring line and gearing up to carry LoveMily, “little old man meets baby” cardigan sweater designs (these cozy little handmade cotton pieces — we’ve seen ‘em — come in chocolate brown or heather gray).

We think all of Nyboer’s stuff is something to chitter about!

A New Day in May Toddler Spring jacket

a_day_in_may.jpgThe New Day in May Jacket from Skipping Hippos is wonderful on so many levels.  It is 100% pure cotton wale corduroy and has the most darling dogwood pattern at the bottom which floats around the base of the jacket in a modernistic whimsy.  The inside of this jacket has a beautiful floral and polka dot pattern for a little twist—I am always a fan of wonderful fabrics on the inside of coats and purses…

This jacket is absolutely adorable and will keep your toddler comfortable in cool weather.  What a chic way to ring in the spring! The other huge plus to this jacket is that a portion of the proceeds go to the wonderful charity Love Without Boundaries which provides important surgeries to orphans throughout the world. One of the more common surgeries that are provided are surgeries to correct cleft pallets which is a life changing surgery for people who need it.

Skipping Hippos is a great little online boutique run by a San Francisco mom, who built her business around her fabulous baby and toddler ponchos—great, great, great!!!

Learn CPR at Home

logo.gifWhile on vacation, I saw the Infant CPR Anytime featured as a “mommy must-have” on Martha Stewart.  This was such a wonderful find since I keep meaning to sign my husband and I up for a refresher CPR course now that it has been a while since we have had one.

What has been holding me back is the difficulty of finding a sitter for the time the classes are available etc.  This is the next best thing and I am so happy I found it!  I am going to figure out which kit best suits my family and get one!

If you are like us, and getting out to a CPR class is difficult, give this at home kit from The American Heart Association a try!!!

test_2.jpgtest_2.jpg

Luca Bleu makes a point of uniting the chicest and finest of finds for mom and baby at one hip website.

I recently received the Yuzzles, a handmade faux fur boot accessory from Luca Bleu , and they have literally shot up to the number one favorite thing I have for my daughter to wear.

Yuzzles are a look transforming accessory for Ugg boots, or any boot for that matter!  Mine jazz up a hot pink pair of random snow boots that my daughter still fits in from last year, and my my my, are they ever my favorite things to see her in—she  is equally dazzled by them!  They truly turn her everyday utility snowboot into a high fashion statement- instantly.  Everytime we go out, just about every woman and even a few men, fawn over her boots when she has her Yuzzles on them…she adores the attention, and it makes our outings fun and social!

When they came, they were so beautifully wrapped in tissue paper with the most amazing ribbon AND  a handwritten note which is just how they do it at Luca Bleu—high style, perfect customer service, and a personal touch— hard to find these days!  On their website, they also have a drop down menu of designers they carry so that you can shop by either category or designer which.  Love that feature!

Check out Luca Bleu to find Yuzzles in infant and toddler sizes along with a beautiful little collection of chic items for mom, dad, and child…  Mama Jen

TykeLights offer portable lighting for your child!

                green-bedroom.jpg

When I was out visiting family, my sister-in law had a rather unusual looking device on her beautiful twin babys’ dresser(I am a proud first-time aunt can you tell??).  I had to ask about it and found out it was a Tykelight!

TykeLights are these amazing little light-up creatures that contain a rechargeable battery which keeps them going for 10 hours.  Set the TykeLight on it’s base (which plugs into the wall) to get some juice, take it off and it lights up!  Perfect for providing light for your child in the middle of the night, AND, it’s portable for those walks down the hallway in the middle of the night to mom and dad’s bed or the bathroom… genius!

Ours is coming via Amazon and I can’t wait for it!   It is also available at Target online , and possibly in their stores.   Take a look at the differences–one model does have a sleep timer which will turn the TykeLight off after 15 minutes.  That feature is great for not wanting so much light all night, or as an agreed upon signal to your child that it’s time to stop playing with toys and books in bed and get to sleep.  Since it doesn’t plug into the wall, you also don’t have to worry about little hands fidgeting with it while it is in the outlet—a nightlight problem in our house!   TykeLights absolutely have MomAppeal!  Mama Jen

New Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Video Glossary can help parents identify the warning signs of Autism

                                                             d_200704_logo-interior.gif

There has been a lot discussed in the media recently regarding Jenny McCarthy’s recent book about her son Evan who has autism,  called Louder Than Words: A mother’s Journey in Healing Autism.  This book has been extremely helpful to a lot of parents who are trying to find out if their child has autism and what do do after their child has been diagnosed.

Now there is also a visual tool at autismspeaks.org calld the ASD Video Glossary where parents can watch video of a child without autism and a child with autism interacting with the same environment.  This will be helpful to a parent, since it can be hard to tell if your child does have autism.  By watching the videos, and the  childrens’ different reactions to their environment,  you can be better prepared to ask questions of your doctor and be better equipped to explain what worries you about your child’s behavior.

“… an innovative web-based tool designed to help parents and professionals learn more about the early red flags and diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). ”

Pass this on to anyone you know who would find this helpful.  Mama Jen

Lucy and Michael play tents are full of swank!

     pt_mack.gifmore_fun.gif

My daughter absolutely loves her “own” space.  She has a little tent that she adores going into and hiding things and playing for a little bit, which is great for her.  I love seeing independance sprout here and there from my very rooted-in-everything-mommy little girl!

I assume, as she gets older, the whole mess of hand made, close-pinned sheet tents will bring her much joy…They will make me nostalgic for some of my hand spun fort wonders—until I am the one that has to fold all the sheets up neatly in the linen closet!  I absolutely dislike folding!!!

When a friend mentioned a Play Tent from Lucy and Michael, I drooled over the adorable little abodes for kids on their website…take a gander, you’ll see what I mean!!! Great for your home or a wonderful gift… Mama Jen
