Cinematters makes family movies matter!

cinematters.gif

If you’re looking for a fun way to connect with your children, the Cinematters team of “Master Stormbrainer”(Kelly Parthen) and “Captain Write Bright” (Shannon Payette Seip) have found a way that is full of MomAppeal!

Their Cinematters website includes past columns that have been syndicated to many newspapers and parenting magazines, as well as some parenting websites, reaching out to about 3,000,000 lucky readers.

What they do is absolutely fabulous!  They watch family movies such as “Flushed Away,” “Cars,” and “Flicka.”  They then take the time to find an underlying lesson, AND put together fun, do-it-yourself games to help you and your children apply that lesson to your own lives.

Just a couple of my personal faves, are the games that go with “Akeelah the Bee”—a crunchy, edible and kid-friendly form of Scrabble drives the lesson home—and “Shrek 2″—a confidence building game that focuses on helping children recognize their inner strengths.

Giving your children’s favorite movies more meaning while spending quality time together, obviously, has loads of Mom Appeal.

Psst!! The Cinematters team will also be opening an ultra-hip and nutritious kid-centered cafe in Middleton, WI called BeanSprouts this summer which we will review on MadisonMomAppeal.com soon…think posh high chairs, organic baby food delivered to your door, inventive kid and parent approved organic fare, trendy retail…We can’t wait!!!We’ll fill you in on all you need to know…keep your eye on MadisonMomAppeal for updates and a detailed review!

Bialetti’s Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker has MomAppeal

                                     mukka.jpg

So, I’m jonezing for a coffee, but there’s no shop within walking distance, my 2-year-old is throwing a Nooo-I-don’t-want-to-go-bye-bye tantrum, or my infant is—finally—blissfully fast asleep. Bialetti’s Mukka Express Cappuccino maker comes to my rescue. Daily, in fact. It’s pretty easy to use, even for the sleep-deprived — fill the water container, espresso filter and milk container, screw it all together, push down the pressure valve and place on the stovetop. Four minutes later, my frothy fix is served. If I’m super organized, I prep the whole thing before bed and stick in the fridge so I can just pop it on the stovetop after stumbling bleary-eyed to the kitchen in the morning. Does it make me a better mom? No (maybe?). But it sure makes me happy.

For the budget-conscious who just can’t give up their daily cuppa good joe, think of it this way: You’ll save yourself a daily $3.50 for that ginormous latte, and instead can feel guiltless about getting a killer pedicure and few pairs of hip wedges or sexy slingbacks.

Available at  Amazon and bialettishop.com, we love that you can buy the Pink edition online at www.bialettishop.com and a portion of the proceeds benefits the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Kate

Chic, buffed looking nails in seconds!!

                                   pd_00296_00_lg.jpg

When you are rushing around in the morning, the last thing you have time to do is carefully paint your fingernails and then do NOTHING while they dry.  I am an impatient person, and  that wait time is always cut short  due to boredom, or needing to handle necessary diaper changes, food spills, run-away pets, boo-boos etc…you picture your mornings as a mother, fill in the blanks, and you get the picture!

Neutrogena has come to the rescue for us busy moms who want their fingernails to look pulled together with a healthy shine, but don’t want to wait for it to set.

Winner of Allure Magazine’s Breakthrough award, Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer makes nails look finished and healthy—without polish!  That means, no more strong polish odor, remover odor, or, my biggest pet peeve–CHIPPING!  When you need more celeb-like shine, you just reapply!

The solution enriches nails, dries instantly, and looks fab!  I have one in my purse, in my medicine cabinet, and in the car…so small, so amazing!

You can find it at any local drugstore that carries Neutrogena. Jen

Age appropriate info from Baby Center

I began using this awesome, easy to navigate site back when I was pregnant and continue to use it!

While you’re pregnant, you just plug in where you are in your pregnancy, and you get a  handy dandy weekly update on the typical progress of your unborn baby emailed to you.  There are also tips, and what you can expect as far as changes in your ever expanding body.

Best thing is, you continue to get weekly updates on your babe once they are born.  These updates feature behavior, cognitive skills, emotional development, and possible parenting issues you may be having.  It really helps give you some insight as to what is going on in that little noggin!

I love the site, as it includes tons of info on health, parenting, kids, babies and pregnancy.  There are also forums where you can discuss topics  online and find parents in your community.

They also have a great online store where you can order to your heart’s content! Jen

Go for a Retro or Futuristic trike!!

                 trike.jpg

Wish I had this one when I was little!!

For those who love pink, this adorable Pegasus retro trike is available at Target.  It is modeled after the classic 1934 Van Doren design that you see in museums.  It is such a sweet version of a tricycle!!

Protect your little beach bum!

             Banana Boat

Sunscreen is so important this time of year that I had to mention my current fave!!

I cover myself and my little one in Banana Boat’s Tear Free Baby sunscreen SPF 50 before we play in the sun.

It uses Titanium dioxide as it’s sunblock which is actually a physical block rather than a chemical block.  The physical blocks, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are much more effective than chemical blocks such as avobenzene.

Remember Zinka??  People had white or blue strips of sunblock on their noses??  Well…good protection, but bad fashion!!!  They have found a way to make these ultra effective physical blocks clear, and here we are…fabulous protection, that is great for sensitive skin, is tear-free and—-invisible!

I have used this on my daughter successfully since she was six months old.  I recently had the opportunity to test it’s effectiveness in the 102 degree sun in Las Vegas.  Turnout?? I was able to sip mimosas and lay by the pool for a couple of hours without getting a burn!

Look for this superior product online at Amazon, or at your local grocer or drugstore.

Tip—rub it in a little more than your old lotion, and you won’t even notice it is there!!! Jen

Security While You Sleep

Ok, sleep has tons of MomAppeal….so, if you get worried about your family’s safety during severe weather, I have found an answer.

The Radioshack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME technology fits the bill!!!
                                      radio.jpg

A little over the top, maybe, but I  am sick of fighting sleep to watch the television for warnings.  I want full warning before I unknowingly get tossed to Kansas in the middle of the night!

This unit gives me that security, and the S.A.M.E technology lets you narrow down what  areas, and emergencies you’d like an  audible alarm for, and which you’d rather not.  It is very simple to use, and I can tell you it works great!

One added bonus—there is a weather button that you can push to get up to the minute NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather conditions…so handy!! Jen

Time Saving Fitness!

images.jpgRecently, Dustin introduced a grueling but rewarding addition to our workouts…interval training.  It really works, and takes less time…leaving more time for playing in the sprinkler with your kids! Try it out, and be sure to let us know what you think…read on as Dustin explains how it’s done!

“Gone are the days of fast walking and low intensity cardio to get the job done—it just isn’t very effective at burning calories and both are a big time commitment, not to mention too hard on the skeletal structure.

All research is pointing to interval training as the new cardio of the future. A new research study out of Australia found that interval training is 3 times more effective at burning fat than traditional low intensity jogging. Why isn’t everyone doing it you ask? Well… it’s flat out tough!

What exactly is interval training? Interval training is any traditional mode of aerobic exercise, but it’s the intensity level that makes it different. Interval training consists of high intensity bursts of effort followed by a recovery period. Usually the recovery period is 2-3 times longer than the high intensity part. Continue to repeat this high and low intensity rotation for the desired amount of time. For a fit individual, this might look like a 30 second all out sprint on the treadmill, followed by a 90 second recovery jog. For a beginning exerciser, it may be a 60 sec fast walk on an incline followed by a 120 sec slow walk on flat ground.

Because interval training is much more intense, only spend 15-20 minutes doing it. Be sure so warm up for 5 minutes before and cool down for another 5 minutes after.”

Yep, he said only 15-20 minutes…now that’s my kind of workout!
